Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is a systemic therapy that can treat cancer, slow its growth, and prevent it from spreading, depending on the cancer’s type, location, and severity. It can be given in multiple methods, but the most common are oral and intravenous (directly into the blood stream).

The type of chemotherapy used depends on the individual’s cancer type, stage, and location.

Hormone Cancer Therapy

Hormones are chemical messengers that regulate many bodily processes, including blood sugar, metabolism, and fertility. Unfortunately, some naturally occurring hormones — including insulin and estrogen — can be responsible for cancer cell growth.

Hormone cancer therapy works in different ways, either by blocking or altering the cell receptors that hormones connect to or eliminating the hormone causing cancerous cell growth.

Immunotherapy

Because cancer originates in the body, your immune system does not recognize the threat of cancer cells or attempt to destroy them. Therefore, there is no immune response and cancer grows unchecked by the body’s defense system. Immunotherapy for cancer is a method of treatment that uses the body’s immune system to find and destroy cancer cells.

There are various types of immunotherapy, including:

  • Monoclonal antibodies (mABs)
  • Cancer vaccines
  • Cytokine therapies
  • Adoptive T-cell transfers
  • Donor Lymphocyte Therapy (DLI)
  • Radioimmunotherapy
  • Virus immunotherapy for cancer
  • Immune checkpoint inhibitors

Targeted Therapy

Considered a precision medicine, targeted therapy stops molecular mutations on cancer cells to prevent them from growing and spreading. These targeted therapies allow medications to kill cancer cells and leave most other cells alone by focusing on specific traits of the cancerous cells of a person’s tumor. The types of medicines used in targeted therapy include:

  • PARP inhibitors
  • Kinase inhibitors
  • Angiogenesis inhibitors
  • Monoclonal antibodies (mABs)
  • Radioimmunotherapy
