As our in-house Oncology Social Worker, Melissa Costi is tasked with assisting patients and their families as they navigate through the complicated emotions and psychosocial needs brought on by a cancer diagnosis. She helps patients constructively and successfully process every aspect of their cancer and how it has impacted them, listening as they share and struggle with their joys, regrets, fears, strengths, and weaknesses. Melissa feels that being present with people and providing a non-judgmental setting for patients is an essential part of treatment, and she is honored to help patients and their families at such significant times in their lives.
Melissa received her Bachelor of Science degree in 2012 after majoring in Interdisciplinary Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at Fresno State, then went on to earn her Master of Social Work at the University of Southern California. During her time as a graduate school intern, Melissa discovered her passion for oncology social work. Since 2015, she has been working with patients of all ages with early, advanced, and end-stage cancer before, during, and after their treatment. Her clinical experience includes adult and pediatric individual counseling, bereavement counseling, palliative care, and hospice coordination, helping families cope with psychosocial aspects of cancer care, interdisciplinary teamwork, and support group facilitation.
Outside of work, Melissa loves spending quality time with her husband and their two sons. When she isn’t helping patients, she and her family travel the world, meeting amazing people, experiencing different cultures, and eating incredible food.
